This finely carved teak lintel panel originates from Orissa (Odisha) in eastern India and dates to the late 19th century. Originally positioned above a doorway, the panel features a beautifully balanced composition of two stylised fish spouting water, flanked by flowing foliate forms, with two small squirrels carved beneath. Such imagery is rich in symbolic meaning, with fish often associated with abundance, fertility, and protection in Indian architectural ornament.
Carved from solid teak, the surface displays a deep, time-worn patina with remnants of its original painted decoration still visible, offering a tangible sense of its architectural past. Salvaged from a building that had fallen into disrepair, this panel has been carefully preserved and supplied with two new, sturdy hangers, making it ready for wall display as a striking decorative and historical feature.
