Majus Dowry Chest From Gujarat - Early 19th Century

This stunning old Indian majus dowry chest from Western Gujarat has been given a new lease of life in the Indigo workshop. It dates to the early 19th century has typical Sindh lacquer decoration. The area of Sindh is now in Pakistan. 

The front of this impressive piece is chip-carved in the traditional style and displays classic Gujarati designs with floral and animal motifs. Red beading frames the panels giving it a splash of colour and the entire piece is covered in a rich patina.
This piece has a long singular door that opens to reveal the interior space. It has beautifully carved horse finials on the corners - signifying wealth, while two figures perch on the base of the legs.
In India, the bride€™s family had to offer gifts known as Dowry - to the bridegroom€™s family if they were to find a good husband for their daughter. Dowry was normally Gold jewellery and Silk saris but sometimes brass cooking pots and other family treasures were exchanged.
