This 19th century kharal comes from Rajasthan, India and was traditionally used for grinding and preparing opium. Carved from a single piece of teak wood, it has developed a rich, dark patina through generations of handling and use.

The deep oval bowl has carved decoration around the exterior and a distinctive projecting spout shaped as a naga, or serpent, head. At the opposite end is a large integral handle, all carved from the same piece of timber.

Opium has a long social and ceremonial history in Rajasthan, where its preparation and consumption became associated with hospitality, community gatherings and certain traditional ceremonies.
