This wonderfully characterful 19th-century stone lion originates from Gujarat in western India, where carved stone animals were traditionally incorporated into the architecture of temples, havelis and grand residences. Originally designed as an architectural feature, this lion would likely have been set into a wall or pillar, possibly flanking an entrance as a symbolic guardian.
Expertly hand-carved, the lion has a wonderfully expressive face, with wide eyes, a flowing mane and an unusually long tongue hanging from its open mouth.
The lion retains a beautifully weathered pale stone surface, with traces of old white finish and a rich texture developed through years of exposure. There is historic damage to the tail, along with other age-related wear, all of which contribute to its authentic appearance and architectural charm.
In Indian architecture, lions have long been associated with strength, protection and authority, frequently appearing as guardians at the entrances to important buildings.
