This beautifully hand-carved antique spice box originates from Rajasthan in Northern India. Known locally as a masala dani, it was once a daily essential in every household, used to store and serve aromatic spice blends that form the heart of Indian cooking. The word masala translates to “spice mixture” in Hindi, reflecting the central role these boxes played in culinary life.
Expertly carved from a single piece of hardwood, this example features two compartments revealed by a swivelling lid — a traditional design still found in rural kitchens today. Its intricate floral carvings and rich dark patina speak of both beauty and practicality, embodying the Indian belief that artistry and everyday life are deeply intertwined.
