Oval Brass Jali Paandan Box - Ca 1920's

A beautifully crafted Indian brass paandan dating to the early 20th century, featuring intricate pierced jali work throughout its oval form. Traditionally used for the storage and presentation of paan leaves and accompanying ingredients, boxes such as this played an important role in Indian social and cultural life, where the preparation and offering of paan was a gesture of hospitality and refinement.

The finely perforated brass body is decorated with repeating geometric motifs that allow light and air to circulate, while the hinged lid is fitted with an elegant carrying handle and secure clasp. Raised on small bun feet, the box possesses a pleasing architectural quality, enhanced by the warm patina that has developed across the brass surface over many decades. The craftsmanship reflects the skilled metalworking traditions for which India has long been renowned.

Today, this attractive antique paandan makes a distinctive jewellery box, keepsake container, or decorative object, bringing both historical interest and decorative charm to a contemporary interior.
