This rare pair of 18th century brass palanquin finials from Rajasthan are highly sculptural objects with remarkable presence and character. Cast in brass and originally hand-painted, each finial takes the form of a stylised standing figure with elongated features, jewellery details and traces of its original red and polychrome surface. Once mounted to the carrying poles of a ceremonial palanquin, they would have served as both decorative and symbolic ornaments, elevating an already prestigious object of transport.
Now mounted on later rosewood bases for display, these finials make exceptional decorative pieces and are unusual survivals of Indian courtly material culture. The expressive casting, worn painted surface and strong folk quality give them the kind of authenticity more often encountered in museum collections than on the market. Sold separately, each retains its own distinct character while clearly belonging to the same original pair.
