This antique three-tier brass tiffin box, or dabba, dates to around 1900 and is a fine example of India's ingenious approach to portable food storage. Traditionally used to carry lunches and small meals, stacked containers like this allowed different foods to be kept separate and fresh, making them an essential part of daily life in India.
Made from brass with three removable compartments and a shaped carrying frame with a turned handle, this example also features inscriptions punched into the surface, adding a direct link to its original owner and use. Its warm patina and signs of long service speak to a century of practical use, while today it can be repurposed for jewellery storage, food presentation at the table, or as a decorative reminder of India's culinary heritage.
