Chinese Sideboard From Hebei - 19thC

This antique Chinese sideboard was used as an altar cabinet for ancestor worship. Usually, a family ancestor portrait would be hung above the table & joss sticks lit & placed on the table for the well-being of the household. The everted flanges at the ends were used to stop scrolls rolling onto the floor. 

It dates from the Qing dynasty (1644 to 1912) and is constructed from cypress wood (baimu), a wood less commonly found used in the construction of this style of altar cabinet. Originally this sideboard would have been lacquered with a deep burgundy lacquer which has since worn away. The brass drawer handles have also been replaced during its lifetime and the wings recarved. 

Chinese cabinets are made with exceptional craftsmanship, The simple design of this piece originated during the Ming dynasty. They were used for the storage of silks, bedding and textiles. This piece has three drawers and a large internal storage area accessible by two outward opening doors with a locking plate and pin.
