Crafted from yumu 榆木 (northern elm), this 19th-century Chinese window shutter set retains its original architectural frame. The four shutters are arranged side by side, each with a geometric lattice design of vertical and horizontal bars, a pattern typical of late Qing domestic joinery. The surface has developed a muted, weathered patina through long use, highlighting the grain and character of the elm.
Originally fitted to a traditional home in Shanxi province, the shutters allowed light and air to pass through while maintaining privacy. The design reflects a balance of function and ornamentation, with clean proportions and subtle hand-worked details. This piece was sourced directly from Shanxi by our team, and the frame and panels remain in stable, usable condition €” suitable for architectural reuse or as a decorative feature in an interior scheme.
A well-preserved example of traditional Shanxi joinery and latticework from the late Qing period.
