This refined Chinese ink and colour painting on silk depicts a male court official dressed in flowing ceremonial robes, rendered with calm authority and elegant restraint. The figure stands upon a low platform, his robes softly articulated through confident, fluid brushwork, while subtle detailing to the belt and sleeves conveys rank and refinement. Executed in a restrained palette, the composition exemplifies the literati tradition, where line, balance and expression take precedence over ornamentation.

The work comes from the collection of Jean Brediam (d. 1949), a significant French administrator who served as Director General of the Municipal Services of the French Concession in Shanghai until 1940, and later as Head of the Shanghai office of the French Economic Mission from 1946. Paintings of this nature were often collected by foreign officials and diplomats during the late Qing and Republican periods, valued both as works of art and as cultural records. The silk is presented within a black lacquered frame and the piece is fitted with hangers on the reverse, ready for wall display.
