This exceptionally unusual mask was used in Nuo theater, plays and processions in Shanxi province, Northern China. It is in the form of either a lion or tiger. It is in excellent condition and dates to the 19th century. Nuo means 'expelling demons'. These masks were only allowed to be made and worn by men and were believed to endow them with possession by a god or divine spirit.

The 'wang' symbol on the forehead means king and is representative of both the lion and tiger. We rarely find pieces like this and it is an excellent collectors piece.
