Pair of Stone Octagonal Bases From Shanxi - 18th Century

This impressive pair of 18th-century octagonal stone bases originates from Shanxi Province in northern China. Substantial in both form and weight, these beautifully weathered pieces combine simple geometric proportions with delicate floral decoration.

Each base features eight sides, most carved, but some fully worn, decorated with elegant flowering plants rising from ornamental vessels. The designs incorporate finely incised leaves, curling stems and stylised blossoms, creating a pleasing contrast between the detailed carving and the solidity of the stone. 

The upper surfaces are relatively plain, with an attractive natural stone texture and subtle variations in colour. Their irregular octagonal outlines and gently worn edges give each piece an individual character, while the combination of charcoal grey, weathered black and pale stone tones creates a particularly appealing patina.

Originally intended as architectural or structural supports, these substantial bases would now make wonderful decorative objects in their own right. They could be used as low plinths for displaying sculpture, garden ornaments or large planters, either together as a pair or individually.

Their considerable weight, at 77 kg each, reflects the solidity of their construction, while the age-related wear, surface marks and softened carving add to their authentic antique character.
