This striking painted tiger chest originates from Qinghai province and dates to the 19th century. Boldly decorated to the front with a stylised tiger face, the chest would have served both a practical and symbolic role within the home. In Chinese folk tradition, tigers were believed to ward off evil spirits and protect the household, making chests such as this especially appropriate for storing clothing or valuables.
The tiger is rendered with wide green eyes, flowing striped fur, and a vivid red body, all painted in mineral pigments onto a warm ochre ground. The surface shows extensive wear, revealing layers of age, use, and history that add greatly to its character. The hinged lid opens to reveal a generous interior storage space, while the exterior retains its original iron clasp.
Painted chests from Qinghai are now increasingly scarce, particularly examples with such strong imagery and untouched surface. Today, this piece works beautifully as a blanket chest, low storage piece, or decorative focal point in both traditional and eclectic interiors.
