This striking antique chest originates from Gansu province, China, yet reveal a strong Mongolian influence in its decoration. The top, front and side panels retain their original 19th-century painted designs, featuring peony blossoms arranged in vases - symbols of prosperity and beauty - flanked by auspicious birds such as phoenixes and cranes. The vivid palette of deep reds, yellows and blacks is characteristic of Mongolian artistry, often seen in temple and domestic furniture from the region.

Originally made as a storage chest, this piece was designed to blend functionality with auspicious symbolism. The paintwork has mellowed beautifully over time, showing age-related wear and patina that enhance its authenticity and warmth. Today, it stands as a highly decorative statement piece - beautiful from every side and full of colour and history.
