Old Neem Mortar From Himachal Pradesh - Ca 1900

This large 19th century oak mortar comes from South China, where it would have been used for pounding tough foods, spices and grains. Made from a substantial section of solid timber, its heavily worn surface and deep patina reflect generations of practical use.

Numerous old iron repairs can be seen around the body, where splits in the timber have been secured over its long working life. These repairs, together with the natural cracks, tool marks and worn surface, give the mortar great character. No longer needed for its original purpose, it would make an unusual planter or waste paper bin.
