This superb 19th century Chinese kitchen cabinet originates from Shanghai and dates to the Qing dynasty (1644–1911). Traditionally used in domestic kitchens for drying noodles and storing food, this distinctive cabinet is defined by its beautifully proportioned latticework doors, designed to allow air to circulate freely through the interior. This practical feature gives the piece its unmistakable character and sets it apart from other cabinets of comparable scale.
Constructed from song-mu (松木, pine), the cabinet retains a softly weathered surface with a muted, timeworn patina that reflects decades of use. The piece is formed in two separate sections, making it easier to transport and position. The upper cabinet features a pair of lattice doors opening to two shelves, while the lower section has a single internal shelf and is divided from the top by two drawers. A removable central bar adds flexibility and hints at the cabinet’s original functional design.
