This 19th century elm half table from Shanxi Province is a fine example of traditional Chinese furniture inspired by the restrained proportions and refined craftsmanship of the Ming dynasty. Constructed from beautifully grained elm, it displays a rich, warm patina developed through generations of use, with clean architectural lines, rounded legs and simple stretchers that exemplify the understated sophistication for which Ming-style furniture is celebrated.

Half tables (半桌 Bàn zhuō) have existed in China since before the Ming dynasty but became particularly popular during the Qing dynasty due to their remarkable versatility. Traditionally made in matching pairs, they could be placed together to form a larger square table for dining, entertaining or ceremonial occasions, then separated again for everyday use. Individually they served as serving tables for food and wine, console tables, writing tables or display pieces within the home, making them among the most practical forms of Chinese domestic furniture.

The solid elm top showcases attractive natural grain patterns and retains two old, sympathetically executed patched repairs that reflect the table's long working life and add to its authentic character. The robust mortise-and-tenon construction, together with the gently rounded legs and stretchers, provides excellent stability while preserving the elegant simplicity that defines this timeless design.

Today, this versatile antique works equally well as a console table, side table, writing desk or occasional table, bringing warmth, history and understated elegance to both traditional and contemporary interiors.
