Rustic Elm Coffee Table – Circa 1900

This rustic farmhouse table would make a charming bijou coffee table. Crafted in Henan around 1900, it was originally used for everyday family meals. Its low proportions reflect the traditional style of dining in rural China, where families gathered around simple tables whilst seated on stools or benches.

Made from Chinese northern elm, the table displays the beautiful flowing grain for which this timber is renowned. The top is made from two planks and has acquired a rich patina through decades of daily use, with softly worn edges, and historic surface marks. 

Today, this versatile piece makes an exceptional coffee table, bringing warmth, texture and understated character to both contemporary and period interiors. Robustly constructed and beautifully aged, it is a timeless example of Chinese provincial craftsmanship.
