This late 19th-century black lacquer cabinet originates from Shanxi Province in northern China and is constructed from solid elm wood. Cabinets of this type were valued for their robust construction and practical storage, often used within domestic interiors for household goods, textiles, or valuables. The form is simple and well proportioned, allowing the material and surface to take precedence.
The exterior is finished in a deep black lacquer that has softened and thinned with age, revealing warm undertones of the elm beneath. This naturally worn surface gives the cabinet a restrained, understated character, with subtle variations in tone that reflect decades of use. Original metal fittings, including ring-pull handles and door hardware, remain in place and contribute to the piece’s authentic appearance.
The cabinet features two drawers above a pair of doors. Behind the doors is a large internal storage space fitted with a single shelf, offering generous and versatile storage. Its compact yet substantial form makes it suitable for use in a living space, hallway, or bedroom.
