This elegant 19th-century black lacquer desk comes from Shanxi province, China, an area long associated with the use of black lacquer. The deep black tone was achieved by mixing lacquer with locally sourced coal, giving Shanxi furniture its distinctive finish. Over more than 140 years of use, the lacquer on the tabletop has worn to reveal a beautifully soft patina, adding to the piece's character and authenticity.

Constructed from northern Chinese elm wood (yumu 榆木), this piece is practical as well as decorative. Unlike many traditional Chinese antique tables, it features three drawers, making it especially functional for a hallway, study, or smaller room. The drawer interiors (unusually) are original to the piece and not replaced. A fine example of provincial Qing dynasty Chinese furniture, this table combines history, durability, and understated elegance.
