This gilt black lacquer wedding cabinet is from Shanxi province and depicts a familial scene showing a town building and various characters. Each figure has their own personality with one on the right door taking a little doze. We also love the horse on the right door with his cheeky face. The scene is framed by gilt painted animals. This is one of our favorite pieces we bought on our 2020 China buying trip!

This cabinet is particularly exceptional because it has original and good quality brass. Most brass was robbed from Chinese furniture in Mao's great revolution.

Lacquer cabinets were given as wedding gifts, usually in pairs. Our antique lacquer cabinets come mostly from Shanxi & Gansu Provinces. The wood used in these cabinets is mostly elm. The lacquer is a resin made from the sap of the Rhus verniciflua tree. Lacquer has a long history in Chinese furniture and has been used for over 2000 years. Other colours such as green, blue, yellow and pink were not used and are only found in modern reproductions.
