Description

This striking Mongolian sideboard dates from the 19th century and retains its beautifully worn original painted surface, offering a compelling blend of history, craftsmanship, and understated decorative appeal. Pieces of this type were traditionally used for the storage of bedding and clothing within domestic interiors, valued for their generous proportions and robust construction.

The softly faded painting depicts a series of scholarly and household scenes and objects, arranged within large circular medallions across the front panels. Time and use have mellowed the palette, creating a subtle, atmospheric surface that speaks to the cabinet’s age and long history of everyday use. The restrained imagery and weathered finish give the piece a calm, contemplative presence that works particularly well in both traditional and contemporary interiors.

Originally designed to open from the top, the cabinet has since been sensitively adapted for modern practicality, with the front panels converted into opening doors and fitted with internal shelves. This modification allows for easier access and makes the piece highly functional as a sideboard, media unit, or low storage cabinet, while preserving its historic character and visual integrity.
