his exceptionally well chip carved Box could behave been used as a Merchants Box or a Dowry Box. It's from Rajasthan and has the original ironwork.
Boxes like these were used in the old days by Indian families for the Dowry of their daughters.- 19thC
They are usually made from teak or roheda wood. Our boxes are mostly from Rajasthan. They are bound in iron or brass. Often they are decorated with chip carving that is almost identical to European chip carving, probably because of contact in ancient times with traders and armies travelling from the north.
These little boxes make fantastic gifts, so useful to keep everything from T.V remotes to knitting in.
