This elegant bronze paan box from the Deccan dates to the 18th century and is a fine example of the sophisticated metalworking traditions for which the region became renowned. Cast in a distinctive lobed form and richly engraved throughout, the box combines practical function with refined decorative artistry. Its sculptural silhouette and deeply developed patina give it a quiet presence that reflects centuries of use and careful preservation.

Traditionally used to store paan ingredients — a mixture of betel leaf, areca nut and aromatic spices offered as a gesture of hospitality across South Asia — boxes such as this occupied an important place within domestic and courtly life. The Deccan courts were celebrated for their patronage of metalwork, textiles and decorative arts, and objects of daily use were often elevated through intricate craftsmanship and elegant design.

The surface is decorated with repeating engraved foliate motifs that wrap around the body and lid, while the softly rounded lobed edges create a flower-like form when viewed from above. Over time, the bronze has developed a beautiful dark patina with subtle variations in colour, enhancing the engraved decoration and highlighting the age of the piece.

Today, this versatile object lends itself perfectly to contemporary use as a trinket box, desk tidy or decorative container. Its compact scale, sculptural form and rich historic character make it an appealing addition to a desk, coffee table, cabinet of curiosities or collection of antique metalwork.
