This stunning hand blown Cranberry Glass lamp is probably from Murano Italy. These hanging lamps were very popular with Indian Maharajas. They are known in India as Handis or Hundis named after a cooking pot. Rather surprisingly they are not Indian, but European in origin. They were exported to India as lighting for large homes and to adorn the beautiful palaces during the 19th century. Candles or oil lamps were placed inside the glass bell and the glass lid prevented soot from marking the ceiling. Many survived on the tall ceilings unlike their European counterparts which were taken down and smashed when electricity arrived. Our antique handis are mostly 19th or early 20th century. We also stock reproduction handis which are made in India.
Supplied with a a Single ES fitting but excluding the bulb - wired and tested in the U.K.
