This elegant willow wood console table originates from Shanxi province and dates to the 19th century. Retaining all its original drawers and fittings, the table has acquired a beautifully bleached surface and a rich patina from long use. Its simple, elongated form and practical storage combine functionality with timeless provincial character.

Traditionally, altar tables like this were used for ancestor worship in China and Mongolia. A family ancestor portrait would be hung above, while joss sticks were lit and placed upon the table as part of daily ritual practice. At the same time, such pieces also served as occasional tables within the household, making them versatile and well-loved fixtures of domestic life.
