This antique Mongolian painted sideboard dates to the 19th century. It has layers of paint and lacquer built up over many years of use, some of which have worn away giving it a wonderful feeling of age. The doors have scenes of an official or courtly nature painted on them. They have at some point been minimally vandalized, most likely during the time of Mao. This was done to preserve the piece, as vandalized pieces were spared destruction in the time of the cultural revolution. So not only is this a wonderful piece of furniture, but also an important piece of cultural history.

These long sideboards are incredibly practical with three doors opening outwards revealing three individual interior spaces separated by newly added removable shelves.

These cabinets were often used by nomadic people for storage of clothes and bedding or grain. They were also used as altar cabinets for family ancestor worship. The front doors have been modified from the original closed front to make it more functional. It would have originally opened from the top by a hatch.
