This antique hand-carved stone lamp niche originates from Jaisalmer in the Thar Desert of Northern Rajasthan. Fashioned from the region’s characteristic golden-yellow sandstone, the piece features two arched openings framed with floral carving and traces of its original red and green pigment.
Such niches were traditionally built into the walls beside doorways to hold small oil lamps or candles, providing both light and a sense of welcome at night. The form of the arches reflects Mughal influence, with their cusped profiles and stylised lotus motifs. Mounted on a custom iron stand, this piece makes a beautiful architectural fragment for display in the home.
