Most antique Japanese chests & cabinets are referred to as Tansu. Japanese tansu are storage chests designed to avoid clutter in Japanese traditional homes. Japanese tansu chests are constructed with care, dedication and skill from wood and hand forged iron and have a lacquer or oil finish. Tansu chests have been made in Japan since the 18th century and most of our tansu date to the Edo, Meiji & Taisho eras. Sendai tansu chests are the most highly valued due to their superior craftsmanship.
The most common pieces are Tansu are Isho Dansu (clothing chests), Choba Dansu (merchant chests), Kaidan Dansu (stair chests), Mizuya Dansu (kitchen cabinets), Cha Dansu (tea chests), Kasane Dansu (stacking chests) and Ko Dansu (table cabinets). Funa Dansu (ships chests) are rare collectibles.
