Indian Coffee Tables — Takhats, Doors & Chakki

Takhat tables originated as low daybeds in Rajasthan, Shekhawati, Hyderabad and Gujarat. Takhat tables from Shekhawati were typically made in roheda (Tecomella undulata), while other regions favoured teak. Many of our Indian coffee tables are created from authentic takhat tables, repurposed ceiling panels or doors, and chakki (grain grinder) tables with their distinctive circular forms. Finishes retain tool marks, age and layered colour for a gentle wabi-sabi presence.

Chinese Coffee Tables — Elm & Quiet Proportion

Our Chinese tables — often in northern elm (榆木 yúmù), walnut (hetaomu 核桃木) or cypress (柏木 bǎimù) — reflect the calm symmetry of Ming and Qing design. From pared-back farmhouse forms from Henan to refined low tables from Shanxi, each piece emphasises proportion, surface and grain. Restorations preserve original finishes for a modern rustic restraint that sits naturally in contemporary rooms.

Function & Adaptability

Many chests, trunks and takhats convert beautifully into coffee tables, offering both presence and practical storage. Their broad, low planes encourage relaxed living — display platforms, conversation pieces and durable focal points that blend heritage design with everyday use.

Materials & Character

Expect teak, roheda, elm and walnut, finished in wax, oil or time-softened pigments. Subtle irregularities — worn edges, small repairs, traces of paint — are celebrated as part of each table’s life and story.
