This striking red lacquer pot originates from Uttar Pradesh in northern India and dates to the early 20th century. Simpler in form than the ornate lacquerware of Rajasthan, these pots share the same vivid red tone seen on traditional Chinese furniture. Each one was hand-turned on a lathe and finished using the ancient lacquering process unique to this region.

The pot’s rich lacquer surface has aged beautifully, while the interior bears deep staining from its original contents — bindi powder once used by Indian women for adornment. Pieces like this are increasingly sought after by collectors of Indian folk art for their sculptural simplicity and timeless appeal.
