This vibrant antique lacquer pot comes from Barmer in Rajasthan, near the border with Sindh — a region long celebrated for its lacquerware. Dating from the 19th century, this beautifully hand-turned pot is an outstanding example of traditional Indian craftsmanship. The vivid orange and yellow spotted surface contrasts strikingly with the black and gold decorative borders, while the domed lid features a finely incised floral medallion.
Lacquer pots from Barmer were used in households to store jewellery, bindi powder, or other small valuables. Each piece was made entirely by hand: the craftsman shaped the pot on a hand-powered lathe, pressing coloured sticks of natural lac against the spinning surface. The heat generated softened the lac, allowing it to flow smoothly onto the wood. Once coated, artisans created intricate incised designs that revealed the colours beneath.
By the late 19th century, Barmer’s lacquer work had gained recognition at international exhibitions, admired for its refinement and vibrant beauty. Fine antique examples like this are now rare and highly collectible.
