This original antique Chinese coffer table originates from Shanxi province and dates to the 19th century. Constructed from northern Chinese elm (yumu 榆木), it shows a timeworn surface with traces of its original burgundy lacquer, now mellowed into a warm patina that highlights the grain of the wood.

Coffer tables were multifunctional pieces in Chinese households, serving both as storage chests and as tables. The five drawers on this example make it especially practical, the original brass locking plate is still visible with a subtle verdigris. Today, it would work beautifully as a console or side table, offering both utility and historic character.
