This old Japanese woodblock triptych is by Meiji era woodblock print artist Yōshū (Hashimoto) Chikanobu (1838 - 1912), also called Toyohara Chikanobu. This woodblock is entitled "Hair Styling Artist" from the series 'The Inner Palace of Chiyoda' and the 'Album of Women'. This album is a portal into the hidden world of the Shogun's princess and her attendants in Edo Castle over a year.

This print depicts a hairstylist working on an aristocratic lady's hair with attendants preparing her kimono to the side. Their kimonos are decorated with the karazuri embossing technique on the collar. Signed Yoshu Chikanobu, published by Fukuda Hatsujiro in 1895.

This print can also be found in the Metropolitan Museum, Accession Number: JP3550.
