These charming framed hand-painted Indian horoscopes originate from Rajasthan and date to the early 20th century, around the 1920s. Traditionally created by local astrologers and temple scribes, such paintings illustrate Hindu astrological symbolism and sacred imagery connected to an individual’s horoscope or spiritual protection.
The artwork is painted on paper with natural pigments and handwritten Devanagari script, combining text with symbolic imagery. In this example, a serpent coils around a Shiva lingam — a powerful symbol in Hindu cosmology associated with Lord Shiva, cosmic energy and protection. Above, a winged celestial face appears beneath a band of script, reinforcing the spiritual and astrological nature of the composition. The piece is surrounded by a decorative border and presented within a simple black frame, making it an attractive and unusual decorative object.
These horoscopes were often kept in homes as spiritual references or protective talismans connected to astrology and personal destiny.
