This incredibly rare Japanese altar table is a Buddhist altar table dating to the Taishō period (1912 - 1926). Constructed from zelkova (red elm) and coated in fuki-urushi lacquer. Fuki-urushi lacquering is a technique that accentuates the natural contrasts in wood grain.

The table has gilded paneling over a cloud carved apron and sits atop scroll legs wrapping around sacred hoju jewels. It would have originally been made for a Japanese Buddhist temple. These altar tables are often referred to as 'offering tables,' 'front desks,' or Kyozukue.

The back of the altar table has two concealed drawers which are the best indicators of age on the piece. As with most Japanese furniture, this piece is in excellent condition considering its age.
