This particularly fine Chinese altar table dates from the 18th century, during the Qianlong reign of the Qing dynasty (1736–1795). Originating from Shanxi Province, it is distinguished by its beautifully aged cypress top, fashioned from a single substantial plank of timber. Centuries of use have produced a wonderfully rich, warm patina, with deep amber and reddish-brown tones that highlight the natural grain, knots and character of the wood.

The table's understated construction is typical of traditional Chinese furniture, with a long, narrow top supported by simple black lacquered legs, shaped spandrels and stretcher bars. The dark lacquer provides a striking contrast to the warmth of the cypress, allowing the exceptional surface of the top to take centre stage.

In traditional Chinese households, altar tables played an important role in ancestor worship. A portrait of a family ancestor would often hang above the table, while incense sticks, candles and offerings were placed upon it to honour past generations and seek blessings for the household.

With its elegant proportions, restrained decoration and original patina, this is a beautiful example of 18th-century Chinese craftsmanship. Equally suited to use as a console table in a hallway, behind a sofa or as a striking display piece.
