This Chinese flower stand dates from the late 19th century. This style of table was often used for elevating incense which would burn in the center of a room. Constructed from red elm (jumu) the step style seen here was introduced to Suzhou furniture in the 18th century. The carving and wood are typical for pieces from Suzhou province.

Chinese flower stands like this make ideal bedside tables or lamp tables beside a sofa and are very functional pieces in a compact apartment.
