This Chinese flower stand dates from the 19th century and has a concealed drawer. Made from a cypress frame & red elm (zelkova) top. Red elm as the name suggests has a more red tone and a more aesthetically pleasant grain. It was considered in China to be superior to its northern elm relative. In China, it is known as 'jumu' or 'southern elm

This style of table is also known as a tea table and often came in pairs. A pair of these make ideal bedside tables or lamp tables besides a sofa and are very functional pieces in a small apartment, used behind a sofa or in pairs on each side of a mantelpiece.

This particular piece has a cracked ice shelf at the base, usually a mark of quality. It also features a drip tray around the edge which is a challenging feat of carpentry.
