This Chinese export campaign chest is made from solid camphor wood and is classic of the style with a secretaire and pigeonholes concealed within the top drawer. Being made from camphor wood, these chest of drawers were made in Canton in China and shipped either 4420 miles to Calcutta or 5135 miles to Bombay for export to officers of the British army in India during the 19th century.

The original leather in the secretaire has long since deteriorated and has been replaced in our Wiltshire workshops.

The brass handles are of slightly raised form and made by William McGeoch of Glasgow which date the secretaire to circa 1865.

This campaign chest is an excellent example of the style.
