Elegant in both proportion and craftsmanship, this early 19th-century Chinese taper cabinet dates from the Qing dynasty and is crafted from beautifully figured southern elm (jumu), also known as red elm or Chinese zelkova. The rich honey and amber tones of the timber, combined with its striking swirling grain, give the cabinet a warmth and character that has only deepened with age.

Known as a round-corner cabinet, this classic form first emerged during the Ming dynasty before becoming one of the most enduring furniture styles of the Qing period. Originally commissioned for scholars to store books and manuscripts, these cabinets later found their place within the home for the storage of clothing and personal possessions. This example originates from Shandong Province and displays characteristics associated with both the refined furniture traditions of Shanxi and Jiangsu.

Behind the twin panelled doors is a generous storage compartment divided by a single shelf. Beneath sits a pair of small internal drawers with their original locks, ideal for keeping smaller valuables organised, while two full-width external drawers provide further practical storage. The original brass locking mechanism and elegantly restrained proportions allow the beautiful timber to take centre stage.

Equally suited as a drinks cabinet, linen cupboard or statement storage piece, this cabinet effortlessly bridges traditional Chinese craftsmanship and contemporary interiors. Its timeless simplicity and exceptional timber make it a versatile addition to both modern and period homes.
