This excellent example of a traditional Chinese camphor trunk is made using burr camphor wood. Camphor trunks were usually made in pairs, one each for husband & wife. They were used to store clothing. This simple design is pure Ming dynasty in style. This piece is Qing dynasty (1644 - 1912) and dates to the 19th century. Constructed from high quality burr elm, this piece boasts a beautiful grain structure. Camphor wood is moth & insect repellent and protects silk from damage.
The fittings are made from brass and are original. As is evident from the remnants of colour around the handles, this chest would once have been coated with red lacquer.Â
