This elm (yumu) console table is from a Shanxi farmhouse and dates from the 19th century. It has five handy drawers and is still coated in its original black lacquer.

Made in the provincial style, this very elegant Chinese table has five very useful drawers - Ideal for a narrow hallway or in a dining area. Also known as Altar Tables they were used for ancestor worship in China. Usually, a family ancestor portrait would be hung above the table & joss sticks lit & placed on the table for the well-being of the household.
