This beautifully carved stone Apsara is carved from a single piece of stone. It is an excellent copy of an original statue. These statues are sometimes called Khajuraho ladies due to their similarities to some of the sculptures found in Khajuraho temples in Madhya Pradesh in Central India. Many of the temples at Khajuraho are filled with sculptures of voluptuous dancing women representing passion, love, and the power of feminine energy.

Apsaras were members of a class of celestial beings in Hindu and Buddhist culture. According to the Vedas, Apsaras were originally believed to be water nymphs. They are exceedingly beautiful and sensuous, thereby having the capability to lure, attract, and amuse. They were experts in dance and music and were the court entertainers of Indra Puri, the heavenly kingdom of Lord Indra.

Supplied mounted on a  polished black granite base.
