    Product Description & Specifications

    Title

This ornate antique Chinese altar table would have been used as a family altar in the northern province of Gansu. It dates to the 19th century and stands taller than many other altar tables we sell and would be perfect in a hallway or large room. Its four drawers and underside panels have beautiful deep carvings of floral scenes and animals, painted in rich but muted colours that blend in perfectly with the dark lacquer background.

Altar tables were used for ancestor worship in China. Usually, a family ancestor portrait would be hung above the table & joss sticks lit & placed on the table for the well-being of the household. They were always long & narrow in form - a configuration seldom found in antique European furniture.

Lacquer has a long history in Chinese furniture and has been used for over 2000 years. It is a resin made from the sap of the Rhus verniciflua tree, red is the most commonly used colour, black is much less common.
