This reproduction Chinese porcelain meiping vase is decorated in iron red glaze, sometimes called coral red - it features a dragon and phoenix surrounded by lucky bats.

The classic meiping shape (often called plum shape) was designed to hold a single branch of tree blossom. This elegant vase was inspired by the shape of the female body and was particularly popular during the Ming (1368 - 1644 AD) dynasty. Iron red glaze was a development from sancai porcelain of the Ming period and came to prominence in the early Qing dynasty.

The orange glaze depicts a five clawed dragon, a Phoenix and bats. Dragons are auspicious in China, granting good luck to those who are worthy enough. They have power over the water, rain, hurricanes, and floods. The five claw dragon has been a symbol of Chinese imperial might since the Ming dynasty (1368-1644). The bat is considered a symbol of luck in China. This is due to the word for bat (fu 蝠) and good fortune (fu 福) sounding identical. Red bats like these spread good fortune, spreading, longevity, wealth, good health & virtue. Bats are considered very self sufficient and a symbol of independence.

This beautiful vase is hand made on the potters wheel in the traditional way. It is then painted by hand before firing. Porcelain is steeped in centuries of Chinese culture and history.
