This charming 19th century Indian lacquer pot is a wonderful example of the distinctive spotted lacquerware produced in the border region between Rajasthan and Sindh. Hand-turned from wood and decorated using centuries-old lac-turning techniques, its rich marbled pattern of deep crimson and black creates a striking surface that is both decorative and entirely unique.
Traditionally, lacquer pots such as this were used throughout Rajasthan and Gujarat to store jewellery, cosmetics or bindi powder. The simple cylindrical form, finished with a fitted lid and decorative white metal knop, combines everyday practicality with exceptional craftsmanship.
The decoration was created on a hand-powered lathe by pressing sticks of coloured natural lac against the spinning wooden form. The friction softened the lac, allowing it to bond to the surface before the craftsman manipulated the colours to produce the characteristic mottled pattern. This labour-intensive process has been practised for generations and remains one of the most distinctive traditional crafts of north-west India.
Beautifully preserved with a warm patina acquired over more than a century, this versatile piece is equally suited to use as a jewellery or keepsake box, or simply displayed as an attractive example of traditional Indian decorative arts.
