This beautifully weathered 19th-century Majus dowry chest originates from Gujarat, India, and was traditionally crafted by the Kathi community of the Saurashtra region. Rich in history and character, these substantial wooden chests accompanied brides to their new homes, carrying treasured possessions including jewellery, fine textiles, and household valuables. Today they are highly sought after for their distinctive architectural appearance, practical storage, and decorative appeal.
Handcrafted from solid wood and retaining its original green-painted finish, this example displays a wonderfully aged patina developed over generations of use. The façade is decorated with an arrangement of hand-carved perforated panels and geometric motifs, creating depth and texture across the entire frontage. Carved horse heads also sit on the top corners. A large central door opens to reveal a spacious interior storage compartment, while the sculptural finials and decorative carved cresting add further visual interest. The worn turquoise-green paintwork, combined with areas of exposed timber, gives the piece an exceptional sense of authenticity and charm.
Traditionally used not only for transporting a bride's belongings but also for storing household provisions and leftover food, the Majus remains one of Gujarat's most distinctive forms of domestic furniture. This piece would make a striking storage cabinet, sideboard, or statement piece within both traditional and contemporary interiors.
