This elegant Yumu elm console table from Shanxi dates to the 19th century and is a fine example of the long, narrow altar tables traditionally used in Chinese households for ancestor worship. Its smaller size makes it particularly versatile today—perfect for a compact hallway, as a writing desk, or as a refined console in a living space.
Altar tables such as this would once have held offerings and joss sticks, with an ancestor portrait suspended above. Their distinctive proportions—elongated, lightly tapered legs, and a narrow top—are a configuration rarely found in antique European furniture. This piece features two drawers with original metal ring pulls, providing discreet storage while maintaining the table’s clean, architectural lines.
Crafted from beautifully aged northern elm (yumu 榆木), the table has a rich, warm patina developed over generations of use. The top shows the natural figuring of elm wood, enhanced by subtle wear and a refined mitered frame construction. Elegant in form and practical in scale, it is a timeless example of northern Chinese craftsmanship.
